Understand the needs of the health market

Assess health needs and match services accordingly

  • How can I better understand the health needs of the local population?
  • How can health inequalities be reduced?
  • How can I identify trends in health data?
  • How can I plan service provision more effectively?
  • Who is within a ten-minute drive of our Trust?
  • How can I plan and effectively target my social marketing campaign?

In order to achieve NHS core competencies, assessing the health needs of the local population is something every healthcare organisation needs to do. But, with so much data available it is sometimes hard to truly visualise the problems.

Our GIS, Prospex, enables you to clearly assess health needs, both in a spreadsheet and on a map, which allows you to better understand the local area and tailor your services in order to reduce health inequalities.

Assess health needs

Preston Area Wards showing Unpaid Care IndexClearly visualise patient flows, referral patterns and areas with incidences of high disease by importing your data into Prospex.

Use Prospex in conjunction with a geodemographic system, such as P² People & Places, to drive robust needs assessments and establish a full understanding of current and future local health requirements.

By understanding the characteristics of existing patients and identifying where people who are likely to develop similar health problems live, you can plan your services around the needs of the local population and tackle inequalities of health status, access and resource allocation.

Plan service provision

In addition to highlighting problem areas on maps to identify where different health needs are greatest, Prospex performs drive and walk time analyses, for example from your existing services, so you can see if you are reaching the right people and proactively identify any gaps in your service provision.

Display points of interest, such as health centres and Primary Care Trust boundaries to provide a clear understanding of your services and the demand for facilities. Quickly and easily export the maps and spreadsheets out to use in presentations and reports.

Make informed service development decisions

Patient Access Solutions (PAS), management consultants to the NHS, and supply chain partners to Community 1st Lift Co, use Prospex and P² People & Places to supply Primary Care Trust clients with demographic information.

This helps inform the PCT decision making process,
for example when developing or updating their
Strategic Services Development plans. In turn
this results in the identification of priority
areas, based on the needs of the local
population.
